Coffee Drinkers Rejoice! Quit Feeling Guilty.
As I sit here this morning drinking my second cup of coffee, I thought I would share some outstanding news about drinking coffee. In the past, it was said that drinking coffee was bad. This was a result of poorly formulated studies that did not take into account that many coffee drinkers also engage in other bad habits such as smoking and physical inactivity.

Newer studies have actually found out that drinking coffee has several major benefits. This link outlines a few of the benefits of drinking coffee. There is another study that suggests that drinking coffee can increase your life span. I also saw a graph on one study that showed that the benefits of drinking coffee increase significantly with the number of cups of coffee consumed per day up to a peak at about 3 to 4 cups per day. After that the benefits per cup increase less dramatically for most categories, and actually decreased for some.

So, I enjoy my coffee more these days. There is one thing to keep in mind, and that is that all these studies were for black coffee. Adding creamer or sugar decreases the benefits because of adding calories. Believe it or not, adding cream (real or the powdered substitutes) and sugar can easily add up to 100 calories or more per cup. This negates many of the benefits, especially to prevention of type 2 diabetes. Most of the studies also suggested that decaf coffee was just as beneficial as coffee with caffeine.

I have found that adding just a little Stevia (a natural zero calorie sweetener) makes a great cup of coffee without adding calories.
